Rosalyn A. Engelman

NEWS FOR 2011

Rosalyn exhibits in the Salon des Artistes Indépendants 2010: Grande Palais, Paris, France.

I was invited to show in Paris late last year at the Salon des Artistes Independants. This extraordinary exhibit took place in the magnificent Grand Palais amidst the ghosts of artists past. Under the patronage of Frederic Mitterand, the French Minister of Culture and other dignitaries, a portion of the space was devoted to native French artists, and I joined with twenty international invitees in my section. The major work “Haiti” (pictured below) is a sizable collage of fabric, photographs, wood, plastic, and paint on canvas (130 x 183 cm). This depiction reflected my outrage at the neglected suffering of the Haitian people, and, shown alone on a red wall, it commanded attention. Thousands attended the opening, and we twenty were featured in a beautiful catalog, which is available for viewing at my studio.

2010 also saw my work included in two other group shows: the first in SoHo in New York, and the other at Nina Torres Fine Art, during Art Basel in Miami Beach. “New York Arts Magazine International” wrote an excellent article on the SoHo exhibit, and I’m proud to say that my paintings featured in the show and the article have all entered prestigious private collections. My work and career were highlighted in several other articles and media outlets over the course of the year as well.

It was great to be included in the exhibit “A Stitch in Jewish Time: Provocative Textiles”, now continuing at the Hebrew Union College Museum in downtown Manhattan. My sculpture “Soldier” joined work by Agam, Chicago, Galub and Shapiro; I was in the best of company! “Soldier” makes use of fabric and other materials to create a metaphor for the meaning of war.

2010 found my work entering collections across the US and in Europe. I was thrilled to learn that the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester NY’s major art museum, now has four “Engelmans” in its permanent collection.

Quotes About My Work

Art critic Edward Rubin, writing in New York Arts magazine, called Engelman “a colorist supreme,” who combines hues to elicit not only “peace and calm,” but also “love and joy.”

“While Rosalyn Engelman has been making art for what seems like eons, it is only this past summer New York-based artist, holding back no punches, decided to show all of her colors at two different venues. What made this outing an amazing feat is that each exhibition differed from the other in the artist’s method, use of materials, and content. If I hadn’t visited the artist’s studio, I never would have believed that such disparate work came from the same hand, not to mention the same mind.”
- Edward Rubin

“What do the Golden Globe nominated films Defiance, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire have in common with the mixed-media art installation Dry Tears? Like the newspaper headlines that denounce human rights violations in Guantanamo, Iraq and Africa, they are forcing us to examine man’s inhumanity to man.”
- artdaily.org, 2009

“Her passion and energy jump out from her paintings, and her technique and colors are powerful.”
- Anthony DeLorenzo

“Her paintings convey the spectacular combination of serious, stimulating depth while retaining a sense of meaningful beauty.”
- Jason Grant

“‘A Colorist Supreme’, Rosalyn Engelman celebrates ‘art as a continuum’ in her work as a painter and sculptor.”
- Karen McCally, Rochester Review, May-June 2009
