Lorenzo di Medici Gold Medal

After the second successive invitation to exhibit at the Biennale for Contemporary Art in Florence, Italy, my work was awarded the Lorenzo di Medici “Il Magnifico” Gold Medal, an award for career achievement in art.

The Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea di Firenze is held at the historic Fortezza da Basso every two years, under the auspices of the United Nations and the President of the Italian Republic, who was present at the opening ceremonies. The exhibit represents artists’ work in all media, and the 800+ invitees hail from seventy-eight countries and every continent. It was an extraordinary opportunity to meet many of them, and dialogue about art.

The Biennale’s Jury consisted of museum curators and professors of art from Brazil, France, China, India, Italy, the US, Mexico, and Austria. If anyone would like to see the full-color hard-cover Biennale catalog, it will be available if you make a visit to Studio 605.

It was especially enjoyable to by interviewed by SKY News – Europe at the Biennale, speaking English to an Italian interpreter. One can do anything after three espressos!

Quotes About My Work

Art critic Edward Rubin, writing in New York Arts magazine, called Engelman “a colorist supreme,” who combines hues to elicit not only “peace and calm,” but also “love and joy.”

“While Rosalyn Engelman has been making art for what seems like eons, it is only this past summer New York-based artist, holding back no punches, decided to show all of her colors at two different venues. What made this outing an amazing feat is that each exhibition differed from the other in the artist’s method, use of materials, and content. If I hadn’t visited the artist’s studio, I never would have believed that such disparate work came from the same hand, not to mention the same mind.”
- Edward Rubin

“What do the Golden Globe nominated films Defiance, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire have in common with the mixed-media art installation Dry Tears? Like the newspaper headlines that denounce human rights violations in Guantanamo, Iraq and Africa, they are forcing us to examine man’s inhumanity to man.”
- artdaily.org, 2009

“Her passion and energy jump out from her paintings, and her technique and colors are powerful.”
- Anthony DeLorenzo

“Her paintings convey the spectacular combination of serious, stimulating depth while retaining a sense of meaningful beauty.”
- Jason Grant

“‘A Colorist Supreme’, Rosalyn Engelman celebrates ‘art as a continuum’ in her work as a painter and sculptor.”
- Karen McCally, Rochester Review, May-June 2009
